The Plymouth Charter School

Founded under the leadership of Rev. Nicholas Hood III

The picture above is the Dr. Vivian Ross Campus of the Plymouth Educational Center founded as an outgrowth of the Plymouth Day Nursery, and the Plymouth Day School, both of which were started in the basement of our church.

Plymouth United Church of Christ has had a long history of programs for children of working mothers, such as day care and a very fine day nursery. When the New Plymouth Church was constructed, rooms were built into the lower area of the building that could be used for Sunday School, and also to be used as a week-day nursery.

The Plymouth Day School began with grades from one to three. Rev. Hood III brought leaders of Plymouth Church together and founded the Plymouth Charter School which has constructed a nine-million dollar school building on eleven acres of land near the Church. This facility is known as the Dr. Vivian Ross Campus of the Plymouth Educational Center. The School has an enrollment of 750 students with a waiting list of more than two hundred youth.

The Plymouth Charter School is the first and only charter school in Detroit to construct it's own new building, and it is one of the few charter schools in the State of Michigan which is authorized to manage it's own finances.
