Gregory, Johnella and Marie Moses Computer Mission
Since 2001, PUCC has donated new computers to high-achieving children who either live near or attend school near the church. This ministry is named after two of its early supporters, Greg and Marie Moses.
The Computer Mission of the Plymouth United Church of Christ was founded in 2003 by the Rev. Nicholas Hood III to provide brand new computers to high achieving low income students in the Medical Center area of Detroit. In its first year, this vital mission identified and provided new Dell computers to 20 students who demonstrated a 3.0 grade point average or higher. These students range between the 5th and 12th grade. 100% of these computer recipients are from single-family homes. The Plymouth United Church of Christ and local corporations donated the computers. The church has identified over 100 youth in its community who are striving to achieve and who do not have a computer in their home.
Rev. Hood began this mission with a conviction that children from working class and poor economic backgrounds deserve the same opportunities as children from higher income families. Children who are raised without a computer in the home are caught in a digital divide. As a result of the computer mission of Plymouth United Church of Christ, children who live in the medical center area of Detroit or attend school in the area send their report cards to the church in the hope of receiving a new computer.
The church also has a computer lab that offers 15 high-speed internet connected computers to local residents who don’t have a computer and wish to become acquainted with its uses. The lab is free and available to all.
Currently, the Computer Mission has donated hundreds of computers to high achieving inner city youth who either live or attend school near the Plymouth United Church of Christ. If you would like to make a donation towards a computer, please contact the church and ask for Ms. Henrietta Carson. She can be reached at email@example.com or 313-831-2460. The computers cost approximately $500 each. Donations may be made on line through this website or you are welcome to write a check to the Plymouth United Church of Christ and mail to 600 E. Warren Ave. Detroit, Michigan 48201. All donations to the church will be acknowledged and are tax deductible. Thank you.
