Lamar Willis

Director of Music

 

Lamar Willis was born on January 25, 1982 to Walter and Patricia Willis. Lamar attended Chrysler Elementary School and started piano lessons at Detroit Art Center Music School at age 5. Lamar was enrolled in the Civic Youth Chorus at the age of seven.

Lamar moved on to Whitney Young Magnet Middle School where he joined the school’s award-wining choir and participated in a choir competition in Toronto, Canada. At the age of 11 Lamar began to play the piano for the church that he attended with his family. At age 13 Lamar was promoted to assistant church organist. Lamar graduated from Cass Technical High School with a concentration in Vocational Music and having participated in the Madrigal Singers Concert Band and Orchestra, the jazz band well as the theatre program.

Lamar began playing for the children’s choir at Plymouth at the age of 15. Eventually Lamar became the pianist for the Blended Voices choir, the director of the Gospel Choir, the accompanist for the Renaissance Choir and the church organist at Plymouth United Church of Christ.

Lamar Willis is currently a student at the University of Michigan majoring in Choral Music Education. Lamar plans to further his education and attain a Master’s degree in Music.

Between 1997 and 2001 Lamar was involved in many special musical opportunities. He was twice the accompanist for the Disney World Tryouts for the Lion King. He opened for the Brian McKnight concert as well as for the Kem “Kemistry” Concert together with up and coming R&B group Suai Kee.

Lamar recently traveled to New York as the primary accompanist and musical director for a play entitled “Colors” which one day will open on Broadway.

Lamar also serves as the musical director for the Corporation for Artistic Development (CAD) a non-profit musical theatre company. He is also the coordinator of the Homestead program at Horizons Upward Bound of the Cranbrook School where he is also the assistant musical director. Currently Lamar is the musical director for Cass Technical High School’s rendition of “Sparkle.”
