The History of the Progressive Circle

In the late 1930’s, the young women of Plymouth Church, under the leadership of the Rev. Horace A. White, organized The Pyramid Club for the purpose of fundraising. The group, though small, was active and prominent. By the 1950’s, the membership had dwindled and became inactive. Dr. Violet Lewis, a longtime member of Plymouth, and founder and president of Lewis Business College, began reactivating the Pyramid Club membership. With the Pyramid members as its nucleus, and many new recruits, a new group was organized as the Women’s Club.

With Mrs. Geneva Smith as president, the club’s name was changed to The Progressive Circle to reflect the spirit of the organization, and to avoid conflict of identity.

The group’s major fundraising projects have been the Bake Sale and Fruitcake Sale, which continue yet today. Additionally, it has provided financial support for the purchasing of kitchen equipment, carpeting for the sanctuary, the cross hanging in the sanctuary, and shelving for the library, and has made regular contributions to the Capital Fund and current expenses.

The organization’s purpose and motto are, “To foster Christian fellowship...”, “To lend financial assistance to the church...” and “To put GOD first always in fellowship and service.”
